“Hidden Truths” by UK artist Julie Edwards
“Hidden Truths” is inspired by the book, “The Bear and The Nightingale’’ by Katherine Arden. Julie: “I have endeavoured to achieve the cadence of a beautiful fairy tale. However, one that is darker and more lyrical. I am trying to explore how society can be persuaded through fear or ignorance to act against its own interest so easily; a rather apt tale for our times. It’s a book full of stories of sorcery; folklore and old magic frowned upon by the church. What intrigued me was creating paintings that balanced ideas between the real and the spiritual world and of hidden depths and truths; beliefs; rituals; and memories. “Hidden Truths” is atmospheric and enchanting but with a sense of growing forces of dark magic beckoning in the woods: an evocative world of hidden depths between myth and reality.”
“Hidden Truths” is part of Julie’s new “Balance” series. Finding a balance between contrast, layers, random and controlled line. Softness and dynamism, realism and abstraction, memory and stories.
