“The Postman” by Vancouver artist, Pepe Hidalgo

“The Postman” is a tribute to an almost extinct job: the postman. He is familiar with each corner of the city. He is in charge of delivering ideas, images, news, and love from one place to another.

Inspiration and process

Pepe Hidalgo on his inspiration and the process of creating “The Postman”: My inspiration occurs in many different ways. Reading a book can induce an image with enough force to be represented. An injustice, an act, a vision of real life that is impregnated in my mind or such a natural act as a walk taking a few breaths of fresh air or the smell of wet earth can be a source of inspiration.

The pictorial process is arduous and laborious because it is generally about shaping an idea and image that is in my head that emerged from inspiration. It is a continuous search, in giving shape, volume, color, and perspective to the image retained in my mind, using many glazes and changes, until it approaches that image I have. I use glazes and change the images frequently so acrylic is the most appropriate medium for my work.

“The Postman” is wired on the back and ready to hang. With the sides painted, framing is not required.
