Abstract (Germany)

Gesa Reuter (1964) lives and works in Detmold, Northern Germany. Throughout her adult life, she has enjoyed arts education (workshops, courses, artists in resident programs, etc.) by a variety of professional artists from the Berlin University of the Arts, the VBK Berlin, the Art Academy Augsburg, and the College of Art and Design (Petersburg).

Inspired by Mark Rothko, Gesa’s colors are usually applied in many fluid layers with mixed media. The many layers forming the painting, are similar to life itself. Reuter: “Most of my abstract landscapes are connected to my inner feelings and emotions, along with landscapes I’ve experienced. Sometimes there are bright blue worlds, sometimes many grey shades. Regardless, you will find a trace of light in all my paintings., as that means hope and future to me.”

I have always felt a close connection to the elements, like water, wind, air, and the northern skies. Particularly the colors and light keep fascinating me and give me strength and power.

Inspired by the works of Mark Rothko, I have recently started painting with watercolors and gouache. Painting in thin layers gives a special lightness and airiness to my work that I enjoy very much.

Changing between works on paper and works on canvas allow me to explore the chances and possibilities that lie in letting the water do the painting. Traces, running marks, dripping is wanted and welcome. I can follow the traces left by the water. After the drying process, I will start making the decisions about composition; what is allowed to stay, what must go. This process may take weeks or months, giving me the inner distance needed for those decisions.
